The Gunpowder Plot
Bonfire Night is celebrated every year on the 5th November. But do you know why? Over 400 years ago there was a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill the king. We celebrate the fact that the plot failed!
In November 1605 the king was King James I. A group of Catholics, including a man called Guy Fawkes didn’t like the king, the decisions he was making and how he was ruling the country. They wanted to replace him with someone who was a Catholic and who they thought would rule the country in a better way. They plotted a way to try and get rid of him.
