Castles

Have you ever been to a castle? Do you know what they were used for? Castles were built as a form of defence, and improved a lot over the years. They have had many uses and some are still even standing today, hundreds of years after they were built.

Stone castles first started to be built in Great Britain by King William the Conqueror. Over the years the designs and features of the castles got better and better, making them much harder to attack. Before this forms of defences were being built for protection, but not out of stone. Many stone castles were built around Great Britain. They were built for defence but also to show the surrounding area how important and wealthy the owners were! Eventually however, castles stopped being built. This was because weapons were improved and castles were no longer a good form of defence.
