Spring Equinox
Yesterday was the start of spring, it is called the Spring Equinox. The Spring Equinox happens when the Sun is exactly above the Equator. This means that day time and night time are about the same length in time. Every day after the equinox the day time gets a little bit longer, giving us more sunlight every day.
It is a lovely time of year right now, it is a time of new life. More sunshine, warmer weather, flowers blooming and animals being born. What is your favourite part of spring time?
All the trees, flowers and plants are blooming back into life and it is a beautiful season. Do you know the important things these living things need to grow?
Plants need sunlight for light and warmth.
Plants need water which they absorb through their roots.
Most plants grow in soil.
Plants need air to survive.
What plants need to grow
Sunlight is very important to plants. This is one of the reasons they come back to life in spring and summer when there is a lot more sunlight and warmth. Plants also use sunlight to make their own food, how clever is that!
Another very important thing plants need to grow and survive is water. Plants absorb water through their roots.
Most plants grow in soil, this soil helps anchor the plant into the ground safely and allows the roots to absorb water and nutrients that it needs to grow.
Plants also need air. They absorb the carbon monoxide from their air and let out oxygen (which is very helpful for us humans as we need the oxygen in the air to breathe!)
How could you test this?
Could you plant a seed or a bulb and help it grow big and strong? There are lots of plants you could have a go at growing. Some plants grow quicker than others.
You could plant cress seeds and watch them grow really quite fast. Or you could help a sunflower seed grow, making sure that you water it carefully and put it somewhere it gets enough light? If you are feeling really patient you could plant a seed from an apple. It would take a very long time to grow into an apple tree though! You could even have a go at planting some spring flowers like daffodils or tulips that grow from bulbs and not seeds.
Just make sure you remember the things they need to grow! What were they again?
Cress grows from seeds fast.
Sunflowers can grow very tall if looked after carefully.
The seeds in the middle of an apple can grow an apple tree.
Tulips grow from bulbs not seeds but all plants need the same things to grow.
Spring Equinox
I really enjoy this time of year. It is so nice after Autumn and Winter to get a bit more light from the sun and to feel everything warming up a bit. Then before you know it, it will be summer.
What is your favourite season? I think my favourite is definitely spring. It is so lovely to see everything springing back to life and to see the trees covered in blossom and leaves again and for all the flowers to be popping up after the cold winter months.
