Safer Internet Day
At the beginning of every February it is Safer Internet Day. This year the theme is ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’
In a world where the use of AI is increasingly used (I feel old and am stubbornly resisting!) it is incredibly important children learn about what it actually is and how being discerning about what we believe and trust is becoming more and more important.
This Safer Internet Day the focus is on impact of AI on all of our lives, looking at how AI can be used for good, and giving advice and guidance that empowers people to use AI safely and responsibly. It also is a time to remind our children of general internet safety, how to use it responsivley and what to do if they see something they don’t like.

Resource packs by UK Safer Internet Centre – Downloadable packs for 3 – 7 and 7-11 years old and beyond, including an activity pack, an online safety plan and powerpoint slides for a lesson and assembly.
Interland – An online game by Google where children can explore four worlds linked to internet safety and responsibility: Kind Kingdom, Reality River, Mindful Mountain and Tower of Treasure.
CEOP Online Game – A game for 4-7 year olds, based on learning about the topics of watching videos, sharing pictures, online gaming and chatting online. It focuses on telling a grown up if they see or experience something they don’t feel comfortable with. It has no sound which makes it feel a bit basic but covers an important concept clearly.
CEOP Online Game – A game, videos and information pages for 8-10 year olds, to learn about similar themes as the younger game. This one has sound and the illustrations are better, which just makes it that bit more appealing to use.
Digiduck Online Stories – Five stories based around a character called Digiduck, focusing on elements of internet safety, aimed at 3 – 7 year olds. The books can be downloaded as a pdf or read online in the form of a flipbook. At the end of each story there are questions/talking points and advice for parents. There is also a huge pdf you can download called Digiduck Activity Menu which has load of different activities and resources in.
Digital Matters – Free lessons with interactive content aimed at 9 – 11 years old. Teachers need to register for a free account first.
Artificial Intelligence and Online Safety – An information page on AI from SWGfL.
NSPCC Online Pack/advice – Simple information, free/paid for resources about internet safety for young kids by the NSPCC.
Introducing AI – Perfect for this years theme, four Minecraft based videos on BBC Bitesize introducing AI concepts of Building the Basics, Using AI Tools Responsibly, Using AI Thoughtfully and Solving Problems with AI.
BBC Bitesize Internet Safety Lesson – A lesson all about Internet Safety for KS2 aged children, live at 11am Tuesday 10th February, but will remain online afterwards too.
