Pumpkin Picking
Next week it’s going to be Halloween so Violet and Blue went pumpkin picking! They had lots of fun looking at all the different pumpkins, who knew they came in so many different colours, shapes and sizes!
Once they had chosen their pumpkins they took them home ready to carve funny faces in them. They thought maybe they should make theirs a little less scary than the one they found at the pumpkin farm!
Halloween
Halloween has developed over time and is said to have originally come from an ancient festival from 2000 years ago called Samhain. The Celts who were living in this country at the time celebrated their new year on the 1st November. The end of their year was when the harvest had been completed and the new year started off with the colder darker months. They believed the night before the new year the worlds between the living and the dead became blurred and was a time that maybe old souls came to visit!
Much later on the 1st November was made a day to celebrate saints by the Catholic Church, and it was called All Saints Day. These two events then started to merge slightly, the day before All Saints Day, which was 31st October became All Hallows Eve. The 31st October eventually became known as Halloween to many people.
As to why people carve pumpkins, some say that it was a way of scaring off souls they did not want to visit their homes. Now it is just part of the fun of Halloween, along with dressing up and trick or treating.
