National Bird Day

On the 5th January every year it is National Bird Day. January is also the month of the Big Schools’ Birdwatch and the Big Garden Birdwatch.

The Big Garden Birdwatch

So what were the most common birds in the UK according to last years Big Garden Birdwatch results? Would you recognise all these birds if you saw them in real life? Try and guess what they are and then hover over the picture to find out if you are right!

House Sparrow

The House Sparrow is a very common bird found all over the world.

Blue Tit

Blue Tits are commonly found living in woodlands and gardens.

Woodpigeon

Woodpigeons stay with their mate for life. You'll probably almost always see them in pairs.

Starling

The number of Starlings in the UK has dropped in number by quite a lot.

Blackbird

Male Blackbirds look like this, however females Blackbirds and their young are actually brown!

Robin

Robins are very territorial and don't like other Robins coming into their space.

Great Tit

Named because they are the largest tit species in Europe.

Goldfinch

A group of Goldfinches is called a charm.

Magpie

Magpies are known to be incredibly intelligent birds.

Long-Tailed Tit

Named as they are very small birds that have a really long tail in comparison to their body.

Other Common UK Birds

What other birds are common in the UK? Here are some more birds that you might spot in your garden! Do you recognise any of them?

Wren

An incredibly common bird in the UK but they are tiny so might be missed when people are counting birds in the birdwatches!

Chaffinch

This is a male Chaffinch. Females aren't as colourful. They are mainly brown with white patches on their wings.

Collared Dove

Smaller than Woodpigeons, also often seen in pairs.

Dunnock

A Dunnock likes to feed off the ground and enjoy eating insects.

UK Birds of Prey

Not only do we have lots of little birds native to this country, which hopefully would be easy to spot, we do also have some amazing birds of prey too.

In some places these birds might be easier to spot than others. If you live in the country or travel on the motorway you might be lucky and spot some of these amazing creatures. In towns and cities it will be trickier to see them.

So which birds of prey would you find in the UK? Some of them are pictured below. Do you know what birds they are? Have a guess if you can, then hover over the pictures to find out for sure! I think some of these are a lot trickier to guess though!

Kestrel

A Kestrel is very good at hovering when trying to spot prey.

Red Kite

The Red Kite was once almost extinct in the UK but has made a massive come back!

Sparrowhawk

A Sparrowhawk is a bird of prey you might be lucky to spot in your garden.

Tawny Owl

A Tawny Owl is the most common owl species in the UK.

Golden Eagle

A Golden Eagle is the most common eagle species in the UK.

Common Buzzard

The Common Buzzard is the most common bird of prey in the UK.

Peregrine Falcon

A Peregrine Falcon is an incredibly fast flyer.
